Storm Drainage Regulations

  • EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER, 2006
    • Digital .pdf copies of ordinances can be obtained upon requestion from the Knox County Surveyor’s Office, printed copies can be purchased from Ewing Printing.
  • It is required by the Knox County Drainage Board that the storage and controlled release of stormwater runoff shall be generally required of all new development, any re-development, and other new construction in Knox County. Drainage plans and calculations for the detention and controlled runoff for a specific development site shall comply with all provisions of this Ordinance and be submitted to the Board for approval prior to application for an Improvement Location Permit.
    – EXCEPTIONS

    • Agricultural
    • Residential 2 Units or less
    • Other minor developments
  • It is also required by the Knox County Drainage Board that any grading or other earthwork proposed on a particular site that results in a change or alteration to the stormwater runoff outletting onto a public road right-of-way, shall require review and approval from the Board prior to conducting said activity. Any drainage facilities proposed within a public road right-of-way shall also be approved by the Board prior to installation or replacement.
  • Because topography and the availability and adequacy of outlets for storm runoff vary with almost every site, the requirements for storm drainage tend to be an individual matter for any project. It is required that each proposed project be discussed with the Knox County Surveyor at the earliest practical time in the planning stage.
  • Stormwater drainage within the incorporated limits of the City of Vincennes and its receiving streams are regulated under separate ordinance by the City of Vincennes. All tracts or development sites located partially within or draining into the incorporated limits of the City of Vincennes shall be under the jurisdiction of the City of Vincennes Stormwater Ordinance.
